BlackWallStreetDMV.ORG is ecstatic to feature Joyce M. Dory, a Successful Black Business-Woman who is the sole Owner, President and CEO of Emmanuel Management Enterprise Inc. dba Emmanuel Hair Designers and Emmanuel Salon Studios. Mrs. Dory has a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and an MBA. After 37 years with the Federal Government, she retired. She prides herself on being a devout Christian. She’s very passionate about being a loving wife, devoted mother/grandmother and honorable daughter.
Initially the business started with five partners as a commission salon. One of the five, was a hairstylist and friend of Mrs. Dory who knew of her extensive Financial background and asked her to come in and help with the books. From the start, Mrs. Dory was reluctant to add any extra obligations to her plate, with already working a very demanding position with the Federal Government atop of being a wife and mom of two kids under three at the time. Her lack of knowledge of the Hair Business fueled her hesitation.
However, after serious thought, she decided to join the business but her intentions were short term--She expected to stay in the business a few years then move on. In 1994, the business was ever-changing and three of the five partners left. That left Mrs. Dory and the remaining partner to continue on with the business. However In 2004, Mrs. Dory bought out her partner and became the sole owner of the business. She decided to rebrand and revamp the business. She changed the name and course of the business to Emmanuel Management Enterprise Inc, which means “God with us managing business”. The business was redesigned from a commission salon to an independent operator salon as it today.
"This allows us to help other thriving Entrepreneurs to start their own business and never work commission again."
Currently, EME Inc. is the umbrella for two salons of which one is a studio salon. The studio salon has been operating since 1999. Her family would witness her long hours, see her sacrifice and they would often ask her why was she doing this? Unable to explain to her family’s satisfaction, she knew that God wanted her to proceed and breathe new life into the salon. God wanted her to help other Entrepreneurs flourish. This was a grueling decision considering she initially didn't want to be a part of it but it became a rewarding one.
“The stylists who have and are working at the salons keep me motivated. Their faithfulness and dependence on me to provide a safe, clean, and hassle-free environment.”
It most certainly wasn’t easy working full-time, caring for a family and operating a passive business after work. She’s had trying times from financial challenges (both personally and with the business) to building maintenance issues. Unbeknownst to her, her faith and federal job prepared her to handle the situations even though in the midst they were extremely distressing. It has required her to put systems and a reliable competent team in place.
“The team I have is so crucial to my success and the ability to operate the salons even while traveling. The business has kept and taught me to make sure I am hearing the voice of God, which is the foundation of my faith.”
The current Pandemic has unfortunately affected the business. The salons were closed from late March through May 31, 2020. EME Inc. couldn’t generate any revenue at the time and still have bills to pay that are now in the rears. The Salons aren't back at full capacity or as they were prior to the Pandemic but God is faithful. The salons are safely adhering to the COVID guidelines to best serve our stylists and their faithful clients.
“Know that God has called you to your business then He will see you through the stormy times. Bring excellence in all you do. Be a business of integrity. Know that nothing is impossible with God.”
In the next five years or so, Mrs. Dory would like to see the business expand and diversify into other areas.
A big thank you to Mrs. Joyce M. Dory for allowing us to spotlight her and her company!
